You wouldn't need multiple serial ports if your cable boxes can be set for different IR codes, like satellite receivers. I don't know if they can or not, wouldn't hurt to ask your cable company.

Have you tried controlling your receiver? I couldn't see the flashes from my blaster in a digital camera, some cameras have stronger IR filters than others.
I hooked it up to my receiver and it worked.

I have no problem keeping the settings. I know that nvidia-settings
saves the settings when you exit it.
What I do is tweak my settings, close it, restart it and leave it
running minimized. It always survives reboots for me that way. As long
as I don't close it before shutdown.

update software, so once a month I leave them off overnight.

Because I was having a hard time compiling a second instance of LIRC to
control my DishNetwork receiver(pvr-250 receiver is working fine
controlling MythTV, BTW), I shot an e-mail to the LIRC-list.
