Question about partitioning.. Friend has brought his pc to me a few times
to install Linux on it with mandrake 8.1 being the most recent. Now his
comp
has a 20gig and a 600meg drive. The 20gig is master and is broken up into
a 4gig partition and the remaining is a windows data drive. I used
did you make sure that you told putty to use ssh protocol?
and you need to turn off telnet since ssh is much more secure.
I use putty quite often and one of my main bugaboos
is forgetting to tell it to use ssh when I go to my
machine.

In fact, next Mandrake update (8.2), methinks there will no longer be

Hi. If you are running a networked setup, you may have to (as
some of have had
to do) a:
ifconfig eth0 down
(as root/su)
If I don't do this first, I have the same symptoms you do.
Afterwards, I can
restart my network with:
ifconfig eth0 up
Ron, I have no idea why your network
Seriously though, I've got it fixed! I followed the tip on the

of the other users and changed my /etc/resolv.conf file and bingo! It was:
Why didn't I have to do that??? Cause I was running the firewall/ICS server?
So hurrah! ;-)

Ive installed slackware on a floppy before but don't care
to repeat the process of creating the floppies again.
Thought there MAY be a way to install mandrake
Maybe LM8.1 chooses an OSS/Free driver for some sondcards and an ALSA
driver for others. Muting everything by default is an ALSA tradition :)
Any way I can tell, so I can know what is going on??

My purpose is to have a 'backup' internet access point thru
work as well as a way to dial in and diagnose local network
problems if our main connection is down.

Need your daily fix of B5?? Check amazon.com or your local bookstore
for B5 in print.
I soon will have back in my possession an Alpha server 800/400
with 64meg and 6gig of space. This USED to be an NT (phewy) server
that I would like to get back into use as a more useful linux
server where I work.
what I would like to know is if anyone has any experience in
installing on this
I have tried everything I know to do (very little I suppose) to get
kwintv that ships with ml7.2 to work. (xawtv works fine after
reading the manpages) but can't seem to get it to work.
Anyone have an idea I can try??

that needs to be updated but since I have never installed linux without
a network to put it on (even my home network) I have had no problems

On Sat, 6 Jan 2001 Carl Lafferty spake passionately saying:
Got the 2.0.0.b1 tar.gz of kicq as well as the new icqlib that
goes with it. the icqlib compiled/installed perfectly and now
my configure script runs just dandy.. However when I run make
I get
for kicq at all.
would it be somewhere else besides /usr/bin ??
(I did a find from a command shell and didn't find it
in the /usr at all anywhere)
still stumped. :(

, of course, have zip drive problems of my own that no one
has been able to comment on (ron posted them for me before I joined the

Needless to say, if it can be screwed up, I will succeed in doing it:)

Got the 2.0.0.b1 tar.gz of kicq as well as the new icqlib that
goes with it. the icqlib compiled/installed perfectly and now
my configure script runs just dandy.. However when I run make
I get the following error.
[carl@starfury ~/kicq-2 .0.0b1]$ make
cd . make -f admin/Makefile.common
Did a fresh install saturday and decided to
try out kicq at the prompting of Ron "darklord" hall
so I download the src and the src for icqlib that it
suggests. ICQlib compiles/installs just fine
but kicq will NOT compile.
I configured it with
./configure --with-kde-version=2
and it worked
desktop, but as soon as I reached the desktop the "Internet" icon
started to show a "starburst effect" (no kidding) and multiple copies of
the connection window began to appear--like really fast, filling up my
taskbar and continuing to spawn the app way faster than I could hope to
kill it.
