I don't want to sway you away from this thread but I have been wondering
about usage of linux memory for some time - I mean from the programming
point of view.
Excess RAM is not wasted in Linux, since it uses the surplus for hard drive
caching.
This is a pleasing thing to hear - can you please
Hello
I installed mdk 8.1 on my PC at office and had almost no problems but when I
installed it on my laptop my first problem is that the F13 key (windows
start key) doesn't seem to work. I tried setting it with modmap but have
forgotten how to set it up. Is this a known problem? Can somebody
This problem has been around for a while now. People can't get SiS related
hardware (especially display and sound to work on linux). I have tried and
am working with a framebuffer for my display but got nothing for the sound
yet. www.sis.com do have a compiled driver for redhat 7.2 I think. But
well, JDK and SDK, I suppose, are used synonymously. JDK contains the JRE
plus the compilation and other tools which makes it the JDK.
For linux - the process is same - download the rpm (which probably be a .bin
file). run it from the shell - it will ask you to accept the license and
extract the
exactly. Somehow after many many tries I got these steps (IN THAT ORDER) and
finally got it to work. I do not mind booting into the console first. Rather
I prefer that.
BUT the problem with me still remains that once I get into X there is no way
I can get back into the text only mode. I mean, if
thanks for that derek. i did not realise that the SiS sound system driver
posted on the sis website was a LAN Driver. actually i haven't tried
compiling them either. have u written to them to change the link or do u
want me to do it? I have waited long for a sound driver and am preety eager
:-)
yes. I have tried the driver from www.sis.com -
editing of /etc/X11/XFree86- manually or with xconfigurator with various
combinations on parameters, etc. nothing.
the only thing I have not tried is recompiling the kernel.

yes. I have had that msg before - but only when I have tried to install from
a CDROM. Not sure why it does that. The way I solve it is 1) reboot, 2) boot
into a different o/s like Win, 3) reboot again, 4) get your installation
cdrom in again. Poof! the error kernel panic errors goes away.

Forget the Framebuffer =( (or teach me please =), try a minor resolution. I

managed to install LM8.0 on my laptop and use it with Framebuffer mode. But

commands like restarting X
Hello
I was trying to write some data onto a FAT partition under WinME but when I
start WinME it crashes first and I have to reboot. After rebooting I force
it to start in normal mode and only then do I get the desktop back. I can
see that the files I write are intact but I cannot understand the
