There are several ways to get to a command line with Linux. Once you
are booted into the GUI (in which you cannot see what you are doing),
you can press ALT+CTRL+F2 to get to a bash shell (command line), or
alternatively, you can start Linux at the LILO prompt by typing
"linux3" instead of just

Is there a way to change the run level? I have command line only
availible to me but Mandrake insists on booting all the way up to the
Desktop where I can't see a thing to beging with. I SWEAR Bill Gates has
his fingers in with Madrake or Linux (Mandrake would be my choice right

You can do either of two things. When Lilo starts and you see its prompt (
LILO:), instead of typing "linux" , you type "linux 3" to force the system
to go into runlevel 3 (command line mode). If you want to boot permanently
into runlevel 3, open your editor and edit the file /etc/initab to read
Ctl+Alt+BkSp should get you out of KDE and into a console.
Try editing your /etc/inittab and make sure this line is uncommented:
id:3:initdefault:
If there is a line that says the same thing, but with "5" in it, change
it to "3" w/o the quotes.

I tried the CTRL+ALT+backspace and it just clears the screen and shuts
the drive off. Unless I need to login then do it...too late on the
seventh time. hehe.. had to give myself something to try after some
reading with no production on the problem.
