[newbie] source build problem

I am not an expert in rebuilding rpms from src.rpms, but I have done it from time to time.  I am now trying to build rpms for firefox 1.0.2 using the src rpm from cooker.  However the process aborts after about 20 minutes with the following message: /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.77790: line 96: fg: no job

The main problems with usin vanilla source are you need to be savvy enough to read the Makefile, figure out ahead of time where the software will be installed and what it's fixin to do. Then either edit/patch that file/source to fix it to be 'your distro' specific, or use the

Sorry for the COMPELTE newbie-ness here, but is it safe to remove the tarball and subsequent directories for a piece of software once I install it? E.G. I just downloaded the tarball for Flex and decompressed it into the directory structure, then went through the configure/make/install process
