Well! This is what I did -- not pretty! I reinstalled 9.1. I let the
installer select the defaut driver cs46xx. After installation, I selectively
installed alsa. Rebooted, cs46xx failed to load. Went to harddrake and
selected driver cs4232. Rebooted, cs4243 loaded. Now there is a speaker on

Meanwhile, I would run HardDrake from the mcc. Select the card, and
see what it says it is. I can't remember the names on the two
buttons on the right, but try them. One of them will show suggested
alternative drivers.

There have been numerous warnings concerning SBLive cards that say that have
the emu10k1 chip but, in point of fact, do not. The mere fact that this is
possible, makes the SBLive an unatractive option for Linux.

as such was actually an Ensoniq, so it's necessary to see exactly
what HardDrake believes it to be. If it does see SBLive, then
emu10k1 is the driver

Anyway, once you get that sorted out, here is what i did to make my
sound work for my first install (the second time i installed it worked
from the start...):
0. Run and save kmix

After I installed 9.1 a while ago, I used aumix to uncheck Mute All, and the
sound worked. Next time I booted it was check on again. I unchecked it,
saved, quit aumix, started it again and it was ckecked again. Went round and
round with aumix with no luck. NOW it won't even come up. Run from K
