I tried last night to sign up with freewwweb, and I got almost through the
registration process to where I think it was going to actually do
something. Then I got some kind of server error from their end? I was
running Linux; do you have to run Windows when you sign up?

As for the modem problem, lets hope that you do
not have a 'winmodem' as these are not supported
very well in linux if at all.

Ok no problem.
First bring up kppp via the menu or by typing
kppp in a virtual terminal.
Then click on setup, and a new window should
pop up titled kppp Configuration.
Then click on the New... button and another iwndow
should pop up titled New Acount
then the connection name (you can call this
The last time I tried it, it worked for me I just did
not download any of thier software, I just took
the DNS numbers and put them into kppp
and I set my browser's home page to
http://home.freewwweb.com and it made out ok.

I'm not sure how to check the dns numbers in the kppp. You may have to walk
me through this...I am fairly new to Linux and fairly new to computers (owned
one for 2 years).

the freewwweb service does not require the windows
software, all I did was to put the correct dns numbers
in kppp where they belong (ask me if you don't quite know)
and then *make sure* that the browser that your using
has "home page" set to http://home.freewwweb.com
and that should continue to wo
Ok, so I want to download this to run on Madrake 7.0, but I have to use
Windows '95 and AOL to get it. Once I get it, how do I get Linux to dectect
my modem and how do I install the program..?

Nope, you don't have to use any program. Just go to this page:
https://reg.freewwweb.com/cgi-bin/signup.cgi and then just fill out the info it
asks for. And now you're signed up! And thanks for the link to it, for while I
already have cable, I used it to connect my Dreamcast to the internet.

I checked this out...I am currently using Winblows '95 and AOL to dial
up...When I went there it asked me what type of OP, and didn't have anything
listed for Mandrake...Will downloading this software work under Linux?

I just thought and should have before replying the first time. :P You may
need to look for one of the free ISP's that advertise you don't have to
stare at banner ads the entire time surfing. I doubt any out there have
there software interfaces available for Linux. Sorry I didn't think about

Any ISP should be able to handle a Linux user as far as their hardware is
concerned. However getting tech support from them on doing it may be
another story. I would just get manual setting from any of the ones that
are available out there for free and set it up just like you have done with
