I had a problem using the CUPS printer setup. It worked for the test but after that it never would work. Try plain LP0. I also have an external modem on Com1 and used KPPP to get it going. Open it and I think under modem you pick /dev/ttyS0 for COM1 Then query it and it should identify itself
