Have a look at http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/Status6.html#6 this is the status of the support for ati for 4.1 and 3.3.6 basically your card should be supported by both version (OK there are these ominous two letters after the mach64...) Theoretically the ati driver should solve your problem in 4.x
