I would rather assume that the graphic card is not recognised in such case one gets sometimes a 320x240 resolution. Depending on which version of X you are using (I don't know FreeBSD well enough)you could try using SVGA (X 3.3.x) or vesa (X 4.x.x) The 810 has also given some troubles you should

If RH also installed 3.3.6 then all you need to do is redirect X to the adequate X 3 server (poassibly XF86_S3 would do) and chack that you have an XF86Config which has the right format (RH usually creates both a XF86Config-4 for X 4 and a XF86Config for X 3, I am not sure whether it does that
