Hi there, I'm from the UK and have an '85 CD250 (same engine) that has *
exactly* the same problem - i.e. warm it up, head off, it loses power when
you put the throttle on, then surges, then I'm up and running. Only ever
happens in the first minute or so. Once engine's been running it goes away.

That is normal behavior. Leave the
I have a theory that 99% of internet questions boil down to is this
normal?.
Thanks Allen! I'm going to head out this afternoon and leave my choke on.
I'll report back

Pull the chain from the back of the rear sprocket. If you can fit a 1/16
drill bit under the chain then you need to replace them.
Here is one guy's write up. Personally I think he is letting the wear go
too far. And WD40 is not a suitable chain lubricant/cleaner as it is a
penetrating oil and will
On cold days I used to:
1. Start bike
2. Wait for RPMS to jump up to 3K, and lower choke till it went down to 2k.
3. Gear up, keeping an eye on the RPMs and adjusting back down to 2k when
needed.
4. Once choke was about 3/4 off I'd hop on the bike and ride away.
5. Occasionally pull in the clutch
And that was your recipe to cure the slump / surge on start up? I like the
science - I'm trying it!

Since we are on the subject of chains, I found this article and I'm
definitely buying the brush.

Side question: How do you have your bike running without being on it? My
bike won't start unless the sidestand is up and will kill the engine if I

depending on the bike you should be able to leave it on side stand and just
pull in the clutch and after it starts let clutch out. your not in gear. it
will stay running.

Put the bike in neutral. The sidestand switch only kills the bike when it
is in gear. If yours kills the bike when in neutral then you have a wiring
issue.

Yep, do the traditional Honda riverdance of trying to find neutral.

What is the mileage? Any marks from being dropped like on the pipes or
mirrors? Does the tach still work? All of this and any other condition
issue will work against you. Personally $3000 is about top price unless you
get someone who HAS to have that bike. For $3k I'd expect new tires,
allen? its in the title.

Well but this is a 2001, and you don't see those very often. I would say if
everything works fine and mileage is low, $3k is about right.

Still condition and mods play a major role in the price that people are
willing to pay. With 8K and no condition issues I agree $3000 is a fair
price.

Here is one that is not only the rare 1 year only blue color, but actually
sold on ebay. It has 24K miles which we all know is nothing, it sold for
$2000.

To all,
It has never been dropped, but the tach does bounce around, so not broken
all the way yet, but the spring I am sure will go soon.
Still pondering the idea of keeping but thought I would ask the group there
thoughts on price?
Thanks for the input.

Sure, for what it is worth my kids are still relatively young as well. I
struggled with it for a while too, and still do sometimes. I occasionally
feel selfish because I am putting myself at an increased risk. But you have
to live your life as well, and if doing something you love on occasion is

Yours is worth at least $3000. What you see on Craigslist is seldom what they
sell for. However, I had a 2002 with less than 4,000 miles on it and sold it a
few months ago for $3800. I had only one person come and look at it and he
didn't ask any questions, just bought it on the spot. Mine
First of all, hot damn, you totally CAN put the side stand down in neutral!
This is a life changing discovery. You guys are my heroes.
Second of all, the choke thing. This helped! I started the bike, choke all
the way on. After a couple minutes, I went down to 3/4 choke, another
couple
no that is not normal. it should not take 8 miles with choke on to warm up.

Your carbs are probably a bit dirty. There are lots of youtube videos on
how to clean them.

The 250 doesn't have a tach correct? I think what Jim was going for was Is
your idle speed really slow?, Also I have tried a product called Startron,
and I have to say it worked for me. You might want to give that a try as

Doesn't sound normal to me but I did have a Honda Rebel 250 that did that -

bikes with thick oil have this issue also. I can see it being more
