I have quite a few Expense buckets (~40) and this can make it
difficult to quickly find a bucket of interest when dragging &
dropping money flows.
At first I tried to follow the advice on the web site and consolidate
my buckets (i.e. merge buckets like Electricity, Water, and Garbage

I just started using MoneyWell to automate what I used to do in Excel

being able to annotate spending plan amounts and money flows. In
Excel, I accomplished this by inserting comments into the relevant
cell, but I can't find a

I would also recommend reducing the number of buckets to the minimum
possible. Do you really need to subdivide all those things? I have
recently combined some buckets and it makes things simpler.

I've recently been debating splitting up my buckets, but not into
ordinary subcategories, more by:
1) necessary vs discretionary
2) periodic (>1mo) vs monthly
3) fixed vs variable
But I haven't yet decided. I've been tempted to go with #2 there,
just so I know which buckets I expect to have

I make a bucket that needs an entry on my tax return. If expenses
don't go on a tax return, I use the least number of buckets to keep
track of where I spend money.
Over the years, I also used to break out income and expenses into
minute detail believing I was being smart and good. Now that
Kevin,
Boy, after making us wait almost a full year for the mobile app, it
will have to walk on water. :)
Thanks for the ETA. I'm wondering why you couldn't release the app
sooner, then release an update after iPhone 3.0.

The iPhone/iPod app sounds great and I can't wait to try it out, but
honestly something as simple as a way to easily export your list of
buckets and their current balances and then get this onto your iPhone/
iPod Touch would probably be sufficient to hold most of us over.

Okay, I was a MS Money user for years... When I switched to the Mac,
I settled on Quicken 2007. It was a tough switch and waiting for the
next release is not looking good. The features that I used in MS Money
have not been matched yet, but I have an open mind.
I would like to know more about yo

Thanks for your response, Kevin. I do have a starting balance, so I
thought it would be best to start at the beginning and see what went
wrong. I printed out my account sheets from my online bank. This, as
you may know, is different from a statement in that a statement does
not have a running b
I would agree with Lance that there are a very limited number of
features in an iPhone app that would provide 80% of the benefit to
MoneyWell users. I'm one of those people using Notes to keep the
amounts in my Bucket List (hahaha) with me, and it's painful, but
necessary. Besides this synced list

It's too bad
I agree with Kevin that releasing a simple iPhone app that only had
bucket balances would be disappointing for many users (although less
so if it were free).
However, given MoneyWell's focus on only spending what you have in a
bucket, it seems that an easy way to export your bucket balances to

The 1.5 release is actually designed to support the iPhone version.
They will appear around the same time.
There is a bucket balance report planned
Kevin - I am really looking forward to this. I currently need to
maintain a separate spreadsheet showing how I came up with my bucket
totals. I may end up allocating $845/month to my auto bucket in MW.
When I need to rob this bucket to pay for something else, I need more
information...
1. $600
I like the ability of Cha-Ching to detect your location, and
automatically start the transaction for that location. Great time
saver. Hopefully Moneywell Mobile will incorporate that feature. Until
Moneywell Mobile, I'll be a happy Cha-Ching customer.

Kevin - I think I started using MW at about 1.1 (when it came out on
the featured downloads at Apple). I would agree that you have a solid
record of improvement with each version. Given your release history,
I am guessing 1.5 in the next few months. I am more than happy to pay
full price for 2.

Currently MoneyWell generates a year worth of scheduled transactions
in the register. Is there a way to control this? I would like an
option to tell MoneyWell to keep only one month of scheduled
transactions at a time.
For example I have a scheduled transaction for 3/24/2009. When this

One of the things that keep me in the right frame of mind when wanting
cool new features like you guys are mentioning is simply going back to
the actual intent of MoneyWell... an electronic form of the envelope
system that Mom and Dad used. As for #2, 3, 4 these would simply be
envelopes that rec

This setting allows you to specify a period of time after which MW
considers transactions to be 'in the future'. So, for you case, set
this to 'After 30 Days'. This tells M
Craig - Thanks for the tip. I just put all four one bucket (auto),
with the idea of minimizing the number of buckets. This forced me to
track the sub-buckets (cups?) external to MW. I will give a shot to
allowing MW to handle everything as you propose. It will certainly
cause an explosion to t
