+1, someone is being ignorant AND lazy (bad mix).
The reg ports change is this (this sets it to use ports 5000-5100):
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc\Internet]
Ports=hex(7):35,00,30,00,30,00,30,00,2d,00,35,00,31,00,30,00,30,00,00,00,00,\

thanks...I will make another attempt

Where are the DNS servers relative to the Exchange server, and what are the
settings?

I may have figured/stumbled upon that one. Just before leaving tonight I fixed
the setting on the send connector. It is now set for the internal nic rather
than the any ip4 option. And it does have dual nics, one disable and unused.

Two, I hit the connector settings and pointed it to the one enabled nic before
seeing your message. The switch is not busy, this can be replicated on a Sunday
when I am the only one around. But the NIC change may be helping. Still
monitoring it from home.
I spoke too soon, that nic change didn't help. However nuking IPV6 on the DNS
server and rebooting it and now things look really good. I spammed a mx lookup
a 100 times on the transport server and it was ok everytime. I hope I didn't
speak too soon again. I will report more in the morning.
Get a new admin.
Putting an AD member server in a DMZ is stupid.
You will have broken the security model for your production
environment by doing this.

As with anything in security - there are no hard and fast rules - everything is
just risk mitigation.
Lots of people put member servers in the DMZ. Lots of people have two (or more
DMZs). An internal DMZ could be for devices (like proxy servers, DNS servers)
that cater only for outbound
I take back the you don't know what you're talking about bit - that was

I appreciate your retraction, so I'll retract a bit myself and say
that the admin needs a bout of training at the minimum, but I stand by
my analysis that putting a member server in a DMZ then making a sieve
of the firewall is a stupid thing to do.
If it's a DMZ, that means that the machines in

Then you should turn of all your computers, encase them in concrete, and launch
them into outer space - and into the Sun. That is the best way of stopping
anyone compromising one of your machines.
Quickly now.
