Try PC-BSD (http://www.pcbsd.org/). It's FreeBSD all nice and clean and runs from an installable CD, though I'm not a big fan of it's pbi packaging system - I prefer building from source in the ports system. I run FreeBSD for all of my network monitoring stuff so far, including ntop, tcpdump, netd
