Hello All, Early flyers seen by Dick Belanger, Sally Swain and
myself were 3 Brown Creeper, a Veery, Eastern Meadowlark, a few Pine
Siskins," Grey Ghost",Harrier, 50 Brant and a flock of 40 American Pipits
that landed and fed in the traffic circle for a good 20 minutes. We then

Peter Polshek and I went birding with my ornithology students today from
Georgica Pond to Mecox Bay (eastern Suffolk Co.) for about 2.5 hrs. We did
not see anything particularly rare but did find 2 Horned Grebes and 7 ROYAL
TERNS @ Mecox. In addition, we counted 4260 Double-crested Cormorants
A quick look at Montauk Inlet this evening revealed an immature BROWN
PELICAN sitting at the tip of the western jetty at Montauk Inlet; presumably
the same individual that has been present since the end of August. It often
sits at the very end of either jetties, where it can be difficult to see.
While birding in Prospect Park, Brooklyn late this afternoon, I encountered
huge flocks of sparrows throughout the park. Most were Chipping Sparrows; I
probably saw 300 or more. I kept hoping to find a Clay-colored among them, but
no dice.

The last two days have been productive at Hamlin Beach. Today the highlight
was an adult, basic-plumaged PACIFIC LOON that flew in from the east and
landed just west of the overlook at Area #4 a little after 10 a.m. For

CHIPPING SORROW with an estimated 200+, closely followed by YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS. Nothing
We also struck out on both Captree rarities during a late afternoon visit today.
We decided to take a quick look around RMSP and were rewarded with close and
extended looks of an immature Red-headed Woodpecker inspecting the wooden
entrance sign to Field 3.

Sparrow, and a flyover flock of about 35 American Pipit, headed towards Fort

Yellow-rumped warblers and watched a Sharp-shinned Hawk chase a Northern

and saw the following:
