I am currently viewing an American White Pelican (AMPE) on the East Pond at
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It is on the Raunt preening and could be seen from
Big John’s Overlook.
I will refrain from pushing up north on the Pond so as not to push the AMPE
from its current location.

The American White Pelican that was sitting in the pond on the north side
of Montauk Highway just east of Old Broadway Avenue in Sans Souci County
Park (Sayville) just took off and circled several times before flying
further east out of sight.

Unfortunately it swam north through a gap in an old dam to the next pond in the
‘strand’ that make up the lake, where it could no longer be seen. I then tried

While scanning Hayground Cove north from the dead end at Cove Ave in Watermill
this morning, I found an American White Pelican in with a large bevy of Mute
Swans.

Bill Purcell had an American White Pelican fly past him at Phillips Point this
morning just before 6:30. The Pelican was headed east and Bill speculated that

There's an American White Pelican at the Knox-Marsellus Marsh right now at
Montezuma NWR. You need a scope to see it. It is standing on the mud on the
opposite shore preening itself.

At 5:30 am this morning, an American White Pelican was seen close to shore
flying past the Dobbs Ferry waterfront park, headed south towards
Manhattan. I tried other parks along the Hudson south to Yonkers, but
didn't see the bird again. Presumably the same bird seen at Piermont

The Pelican is still on the water hugging the West side shore. The right
place to be now is on the east side, on the long beach North of the Raunt.
You will not be able to see it from the shore flats accessible from the NW
entrance right now.

The bird has now moved from the sandbar where AN found it preening. It's is
now on the water half way down the West side swimming towards the South

November 27 - My wife and I observed the American White Pelican was

Both the American White Pelican and Hudsonian Godwit continues at Jamaica Bay
Wildlife Refuge.
They are in the same location as previously reported. Please refer to earlier

Thanks to Andrew Baksh (and his scope!) for pointing the way to the Hudsonian
Godwit at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It was still feeding with a group of
Dowitchers just south of Sanderling Point on the west side of the East Pond.
It could be seen from the clearing behind the outtake valve at
Correction. Godwit was past Sanderling point which is on the North West and
not far from the North Island. Thanks to Doug Gochfield for pointing out that I
had posted 'raunt'.

The American White Pelican continues. Please see previous e-mails for

Before the rain came, I found a Hudsonian Godwit just across the raunt from the
North End of the East Pond. I was able to see the bird from the North West end
from the East Pond as well as from the overlook at

Karlo Mirth just called to report that the American White Pelican continues
at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. As indicated in previous e-mails, the bird
is on the beach side of the East Pond and could be seen from the North
Channel Bridge parking lot on the east side.Good luck if you go.
