It's not as bad as you think Jon, all you need to do is first remove the expansion bead if the seal has one, then take a box knife, slide the blade under the seal where it meets the glass on the exterior side, and draw the knife carefully along, if it doesnt cut deep enough the first pass do

As Nate said, if you saw oil you're fine. The only reason to put anything in the pump is to help it seal inside and prime. I've always used regular oil, you can use heavier if you like, I'm not so sure I would "pack" it with assy lube or vaseline though, it clumps and takes a bit of time and
