Thats interesting Jeff. I was hoping my original E-mail would bring out info like this that you experienced guys have. It sounds like the Pit Stop folks are covering everything with the larger unit. Is there a marking on the carrier that would tell me if I have a 50 or a 72? I did a punkin swap

A second question for you, Jeff. I have gotten the impression that the ring gear in an HO72 is 12.25 inches in diameter. Do you know if thats true? By the way, I just did a Google search on HO50 and came up with zilch. HO72 has a number of hits. I wonder if the HO72 designation is kind of a catc

I don't think that the center section has any markings that designate whether it was a 50 or 72. The 5000 lb and 7200 lb ratings refer mainly to the load carrying capacity of the rear axle as an entire unit because the outer wheel bearings and brakes etc are different. I'm thinking that origina

1958 GMC Master Parts Book lists H050 as the rear axle used in 55.2 thru 58 15x series (3/4 ton) trucks and H072 for same years 25x (1 ton) trucks. I'd guess that would make H050 and H072 "official GM designations". From: old-chevy-truck@yahoogroups.com [mailto:

Well..I just went out and looked and based on your description, Jeff, I have an HO72 with the load bolt. The gear ratio is absolutely 4:10. I have checked that, So, no matter what else, we know we can get an HO72 with 4:10 gears. Now I am back to square one and that is can I find 3:73 ring and
