Mike: Doesn't need a common (or ground). No chassis (case) ground needed either. The 3rd prong on my GMC flasher is output to the dashboard turn signal indicator. Only one dash lamp on the GMC, flashes for either direction. See lower right corner of schematic here http://chevy.oldcarmanualp
