Scott and Tom,
You're both right.
Prior to 8i there were two services:
oracleservicesid and oraclestartsid. The start
service controlled whether the db should attempt to be
started automatically.
Starting with 8i there is only the oracleservicesid
service. The start service was replaced by

Scott,
Having been recently introduced to the world of
Oracle on NT, I can concur with that. I haven't
tried 9i, but no version of oracle prior to that
will automatically start by starting the service,
*unless* you take the trouble to setup the registry.
And even then there may be issues
you can't yet. It's in beta testing only AFAIK

Scott,
you are absolutely wrong on this one. every database I am working with on
NT starts when the service starts. even without setting the AUTOSTART
param.

Tom,
Usually I would agree with you on that one, most of the time it does start.
But there are those occasions where the service will start, but then when
you go to connect to the db it says Oracle not available because of some
stupid error. So then you go with svrmgrl to find what in
Kevin,
of course, if there is an error in the init.ora file, the db won't start, or
if there is something wrong with the physical database, it will not start.
are you saying you've seen other problems where the db doesn't come up?
and as for the recently reported problem of the db on 9i not
Tom,
Not that I can remember. It only happened, like you said, if something was
physically wrong or something was wrong with the init file. The only time
where nothing was wrong with anything and it didn't come up that I can
remember is the 9i. Nothing wrong anywhere, just didn't come
Kevin,
As you are probably aware by default when attempt to start an instance when
starting the services, Oracle
looks only in oracle_home\database for init file and parameter file(I cannot
speak for 9i).

Rick,
Great point, I looked in the 9ihome\database directory and the ifile is
there. It just must me a bug I guess. Thanks Rick, I really didn't know
that, but I did know about that directory for when i was doing cold
backups:)

Scott,
I would have to agree with Tom on this. If you have it setup correctly then
starting the services
WILL start the database. I have 8 instances and they all start if I start
the NT services.

Hi
I would have to disagree with this.
What if you have a standby database - whereby - you *have* to start the
service, but do not want to open the instance, but go through a stepwise
process
startup nomount
alter database mount standby database
recover standby database
shutdown abort
Old behavior especially in W2K with Oracle 8.1.6.0 (solved by 8.1.7.0).

available on Technet.

Kevin, Starting the NT service for the oracle instance
has never started the database in any version of
Oracle on NT by default. I think what you have seen
before is the use of the auto start service of the DB.
This service has a dependency to the SID service, so
when you start the SID service it
