Hi
Denise,
birthed first baby in level 3 public hospital in Adelaide with private
obs, oxytocic given (Dr's practice), but at the same time we had asked for the
cord to stop pulsating before cut. It was never expalined to me that my baby
would receive so much of this drug due to our choice o

Jackie,
Yours was a beautiful story, which I relished. I'm so glad that you and your family have that wonderous experience to treasure and I really didn't intend to bring you down from your high...I'm very sorry if I did so.
Justine,
I'm well aware of the appalling LUSCS statistics and state

At our hospital when a 3rd stage is 'actively managed' it
Title: Re: [ozmidwifery] I've had a baby (long)
can ABSOLUTELY relate to your e-mail Jo.
My first two babies were born naturally (drug and
intervention free) in our local small hospital. The second was particularly
wonderful for a hospital birth - we were SO lucky to have a fantastic

Similar to Jo, I get very narked when people tell me how lucky and brave I
am. I believed them after my first baby, and thought that I was just one of
those people (because that's what I was being told), but after my second I
realised that being at home was a freedom from intervention and that
AAGH!
"At our hospital when a
3rd stage is 'actively managed' it means 30 units of synto in a 500ml bag of CSL
is run through at 240ml/hr after the usual syntometrine jab in the leg. It
has become such routine that syntometrine isn't really considered active
management anymore.Jo"
Thanks Jo, but I cannot claim them as my own research. every month I
get the "Midwifery Today" e-news letter and they publish them. I
have met quite a few of the midwives /women quoted so it makes it very
personal. I love to pick out the "goodies" Cheers,

These days I do say..
wow you are brave to have you baby in the hospital.
The state average is 28% that you will end up with a c/s ..
with the community midwives you have a 12% chance of a
C/S… you are brave to go to the hospitals…

It really p#%*$*s me off when another woman says
"wow, you're brave having homebirths" when I say I had my babies at home. I
wouldn't be so rude and disrespectful as to say to them "wow, you're brave
having hospital births" even though that is w
I love your quotes Mary and often fwd them to the
HAS committee and they are then often published in our mag as a parting
quote.
Thanks for your inspiration.

ps - i am just wondering how passionate Tracey
would be if it were the OTHER WAY ROUND - ie - they showed a homebirth instead
of an ELECTIVE caeasarian would she be so staunchly defensive and as loyal
as she is now???

I too felt the exhileration in Jackie's e-mail -

Title: Re: [ozmidwifery] Today show c/s - Ric Porter
Hello Robin and all
Wasn’t it Dr Ric Gordon? If so he has been quite a supporter of the non-evidence based approach to birth
eg quoted on A Current Affair’s website saying c/s was the safest way to give birth and also on his slot on Good Med
Hi Robin,
I appreciate your support of Dr Ric. You are obviously well
qualified to comment on him in a personal light.
I still remain, however
i'm afraid I need to stick my hand up ( just a
little) in support of this obstetrician.
I worked with him for many years in the hospital
system and thereafter was his consultant midwife in private practise with him;
our daughters were friends at school, so I think I know him reasonably

I agree Jayne, and BLOODY GREAT job Jackie. Remember our chat in Darwin. I have ‘borrowed’ your marathon analogy re being rescued from natural birth! Thanks
Also Sylvia. I think you need to consider a few factors of current maternity services i
