I agree the P-TTL doesn't seem to do much. But that could still mean
you're having trouble from being outside the metering range of the
preflash. What happens if you open the aperture all the way? If that
makes the preflash register with the camera, you should get
underexposure. :-)

Ok, so I finally caved and bought another compact camera.
I tried the Fuji X100 and it didn't thrill me - controls are too small for my
fingers. Someone suggested I look at the Ricoh GXR.
I did. I looked at it again. I was pretty impressed. I got it with the A12 28mm
f/2.5 camera module
If you can find the older 28-105 f4 PZ, most users think it was one damn good
lens. Mine
fell apart after a fall and could not be repaired, so I replaced it with the
SMC PENTAX-FA
4:5.6 IF version, which is still a good lens, but of course not constant
aperture.
