I don't understand why you thought my logic was bad, but I'm glad Godfrey

That is one of the things I dislike of SD cards. I have two for my Optio S and
S4. Both of them have loose switches.
I am sure there are plenty of hardship cases with both types of memory, but I
have never had a CF ever act up on me.

The switch one of my SD cards is loose and won't stay in the unlocked
position. I considered trying to glue it but the whole plastic casing
is terribly flimsy. One of the ridges on the bottom has broken off.
I wouldn't mind but it's one of my newest cards and my only 2Gb card as well.

However the SD reader in my IBM thinkpad reads it pretty well (but slowly).

Yes, most likely a bad SD reader in your computer.
I recommend the Sandisk ImageMate 12-in-1 USB 2.0 reader. I tested
about six different readers, and this was the fastest, and most
reliable by far.

As a person who experienced this (I was always careful in making sure that
CF card was pushed in proper orientation and straight), it was such a relief
when I saw sliding contacts of SD cards.

Sometimes I wonder how this is possible.
Older people, well they have a good excuse I imagine but others?
Well, thinking about it, I'm happy the P&S my mother uses is using SD
cards... She probably would be first candidate :D

Yes, I've been a CF user, so I was unaware of the lock. Now I know.
It's a good thing if you know it's there:-).

Look for a little sliding thing on the side of the card. It is a
