K 30/2.8 the poor mans FA 31/1.8

Hi folks, I am thinking about buying a 'normal' prime lens for my istD. One obvious choice might be the much praised FA 31/1.8. It's quite expensive however. I have the chance to one of those old K 30/2.8-lenses for a good price, but ... Is the FA 31 worth saving and waiting for? -- PDML

Although the FA31 Limited is a great performer, it's a little wider than a normal for the *ist D format. The FA35/2 AL, at 1/3 the price, is 95% of the same quality and is a near perfect normal. I had the 31, didn't like its bulk, weight, or the stupid fixed lens hood (which doesn't

Thanks so far. When it comes to the FA28/2.8 I remember some people were critical of the light fall off wide open. Peter Although the FA31 Limited is a great performer, it's a little wider than a normal for the *ist D format. The FA35/2 AL, at 1/3 the price, is 95% of the same quality and is a

I don't have a 31mm but I have a 30. The 3mm1 is huge by comparison. The FA 31 has a reputation of being an incredible lens, and it's a stop and 1/3 faster. I like the 30mm on film but I find I don't use it much on digital as the FA 20-35 f4 is more convenient to use, (no green button to

Hello Peter, The 31mm is on the wide side of normal, and if that's what you're looking for, it's a fine choice. I had one for a while and didn't care that much for the size, although it seemed to bother me less than it did Godders and some others, but I do prefer somewhat smaller lenses. The

I had one of the FA28s on loan from the local dealer for a day. I did not notice any light falloff of note with it. It remains a very compelling lens for me. Please remember that I only work with Pentax DSLRs, not film SLRs. It might have more falloff on a 24x36mm format, but that is not
