The Sigma 24/2.8 (MF) that I had indeed had very good optics (crispier than the FA*24/2). Yes I'd have to agree there, it's the one thing that puts me off upgrading to a Pentax optic. I don't remember its wide open performance however. Generally very good but my two samples both suffer

They were made by Sigma. They had an agreement with the East German Carl Zeiss in the eighties, and made some lenses for them, 3 or 4 zooms and the 24 mm. you mention. Sigma and MInolta also made some zoom lenses for Leitz, in the R (SLR) mount, sold under the Leica name, with Leica prices.
