There was a 5.1 earthquake about 2 miles SE of Sparta, NC just after 8:00 this
morning. Only "Semi" off topic because it's 40 miles NE of Grandfather Mountain.

Gotta love the granite underpinning of the east coast. It was able to carry the
shock waves from Mineral, VA, to Maine and down to S.Carolina. If it as
California, even at that shallow a depth (6 KM) you wouldn't feel it 100 miles
away because of the millions of years of Redwood tree needles
There was an earthquake in Virgina this afternoon that I felt here in
Raleigh, NC.
For some reason, my house just started shaking around 1:50pm. Seemed to
go on for about half a minute, but could have been longer. Strong enough
to rattle the windows and make my monitor wobble visibly.

Lexington is about 90 miles from the epicenter. We felt it, but folk
were more excited than afraid. One funny note: I was in the Science
Center at WL. After the shaking, all the staff ran from the building
and all the scientists ran to the seismograph.
