Thanks, Jostein.
I almost never do--this was the only one of about a dozen that was a keeper.

The narrow roads and steep drop-offs are still there, as well as the
speeding pick-ups. The best scenery is actually past Hana, especially
in and around the 'Ohe'o Gulch portion of Haleakala National Park. I
spent a bit of time hiking in the park, which is a very scenic rain

Dan,
The only time we drove the road was decades ago.
The road around the east(?) side voided your rental car agreement.
It didn't look far on a map, but took a full half day to drive to Hana.
We never ventured any farther.
Just happy to get back to home base.
I still remember...

Thanks, Bob.
The cultural diversity of Hawaii is such that few of the locals are
clearly identifiable as belonging to only one of the ethnic groups
that comprise the people of Hawaii. In fact, they have a special name
for any family that appears all to belong to the same race:
"tourists."

Hostess at the Hana
Dan,
I was expecting someone of Polynesian heritage.
If you made the drive to Hana, I congratulate you.
My driveway in Wisconsin was bigger and in better shape than that road.
And the crazy Hawaiians drove pick-ups DOWN THE MIDDLE all the time.
Regards, Bob S.
