That was a big problem a few years ago, when we experienced a rabies
outbreak/scare. People, and I use that term very loosely with any
creature that will do this sort of thing indiscriminately, put out
poisened bait for raccoons. Raccoons, or any other mammal for that
matter, with rabies will

I think it would work for all small varmints. Opossums, squirrels, raccoons.
Rats would probably just burrow into an area without light.

An interesting way to keep them out of the attic is a strobe light.
They can hack just about any annoyance except that one. Not terribly
practical, though.

Would that work for squirrels too?

Last week, an otter was kicking some serious ass somewhere. They suspected
rabies but I never heard the results. They can tell pretty quickly by doing a
exam of the brain.

At first, the campus police thought it was vandalism. No animal could wreak
such havoc.

But you have to admire the degree to which they can completely
destroy a room. When one fell though the ceiling into the Xerox
copy center, he managed to pull just about everything off of every
shelf before taking a huge crap in the middle of the manager's
desk.

Back when I worked as a claims processor for Allstate Insurance, I
got more than a few calls from homeowners -- in tears -- seeking to
claim damages due to raccoon infestation. They can do an AMAZING amount
of damage. So, you might want to thank your lucky stars that this

They can get rabies, so be cautious. They are pretty resilient to falls. They
get into the attic in two of my college's buildings and come crashing through
the acoustic tile onto the floor on a regular basis.
They also have a host of intestinal parasites that can make them pretty sick.
