Klaus' formal bench testing matches my informal testing impressions
almost exactly.
Summary: both are
Interesting results. I was surprised to see that the 12-24 shows slightly
higher resolution at f4 and f5.6. In fact, the 12-24 at its optimum aperture
shows higher resolution than the 14/2.8 at its optimum . Although with both
lenses at f8, the DA14 shows a bit of an advantage.

Yes, it is interesting ... the 12-24 shows somewhat more balanced, if
slightly lower, performance at the 18 and 24mm mark. The 14 seems to
hold slightly better overall performance between f/5.6 and f/8 if we
can interpolate between the 12-24's 12 and 18 mm marks. The 14's CA
seems
Of course the DA14 us faster but another little difference (might be
critical for some I dunno) is the that when the AF focus the DA14, the
focussing ring does NOT move (just like DFAs).
IMO this is very important, but that's just me.

Compared Photozone MTF tests results on the DA 14 and the Tamron 14.
Tamron superior f/2.8 through f/5.6, but DA slightly superior at f/8
and 11.
(Have seen the Tamron priced at 'prox $1100).

Yes. But 40% more on price, 50% more on weight, larger too. AND I
could not find a single person (at the time I was looking for one in
2004) who had any experience at all with the Tamron nor any examples
of its rendering qualities. Still haven't seen more than two or three
photos taken
...and I think sample variation may well cover any slight MTF
differences.
BTW, I included the Tamron $1100 price as a negative. :-)
