Rating 160 speed portrait film started long ago with Kodak Vericolor (VPS) a
film with so little underexposure latitude that the shadows to the lower
mid-tones would go muddy. So people started rating it at 125, or 100, or
even 80 to get rid of the muddies. Yes it did increase contrast SLIGHTLY,

I've been using sunny f16 for years with
color negative film except I cheat and
open up (overexpose) a half stop. GREAT
results in bright sun. Call it sunny
f13.5??
For slides I usually use sunny f16 and
and shoot at f16 and at f19 (underexpose)
on critical shots. i.e. bracket. I never

places where the landscape is primarily brown). Probably good for
people. YMMV.

That, or they just think the film is overrated, and a bit more exposure is needed to
get adequate shadow detail.

what I've seen, in the prints.

If you are having it
If you are having it done at a commercial lab, i.e. not custom processing, it
will make no difference since the printer will auto compensate for any
difference and try and produce what it considers a properly exposed print.

I've never shot it at anything other than 160 unfortunately but I have heard people
state 100 or 125 maximum rating.
If you've got a 5 pack, you've got room to play with - so maybe shoot a roll at 100 or
even, dare I say, 80 (if the day is bright and sunny and all).
