The DA 40 doesn't strike me as being fast enough for general use. It's supposed to be the same optical formula as the M 40 and I've gotten very good results with that on an ME as a stealth combination, but it will have a very different character on a digital body. The M is sharp enough on FF

Its all relative, F2.8 is very slow for a normal range optic, but its a speed demon for an ultra wide or ultra telephoto. I think the entire point of the 40mm F2.8 lenses are absolute minimum physical size with a reasonble speed. If it was an F2.0 it would defeat it's sole purpose for

I have a Canon 50mm 1.8 and there is no doubt that is fast. I may, in the long run, go for the 50mm 1.4 just to have an equivalent lens in my Pentax kit. Normally I like zooms, but I think it's a good idea to have at least one fast prime that can handle low light. But fast is a relative
