Shot some hand-held at 500mm just a bit ago. This is a pretty decent zoom
lens.
Though it is APO, at both 170mm & 500mm there is some fringing. I expect
that from a zoom.
Still, it resolves a great deal more

There is at least one for some mounts, dunno about Pentax.
At over $20K and 20 kg, it seems a bit much:
"Pretty decent." I'll say, Collin!
Thanks for the look!

The two low points for the lens is the slow max aperture and the
length it extends when zoomed. It is not a lens that can be used
handheld (over 300mm), nor is it very useful for sporting events (due
to the speed).
I find that I get more use from my APO 300/F4. When I need the extra

Brian,
I have this lens in Pentax mount. Overall it is an OK performer. AF
speed is average compared to others that I use with my *istD.
Sharpness is pretty good at one or two stops down. It is best at mid
range (250-400mm), just as you would expect with a zoom.

absolutely awful.
An alternative is the manual focus Tokina AT-X 150-500/5.6.
Mechanically it is a very nicely operating one-touch zoom lens, very

Hi,
has anyone tried the Sigma 170-500 zoom. How is it's quality compared
to the fixed 300 f4 or 400 f5.6 Pentax lenses.
I'm considering getting an ultra-telelens but I'm not sure what will be
the most versatile focal length. 170-500 zoom would therefore be great.
