I would recommend an OS upgrade. Intrepid was not the best with system resources. I am running a beta of Lucid Lynx (Kubuntu 10.04) on a dell mini 9 with an atom processor and firefox is only using 3% of my CPU. This netbook is MUCH lower power than your system so perhaps the software upgrade is

Try plugging it in and giving it a minute to try to mount. Then run a fdisk -l to list all the devices. I doubt if it will find it, as it is most likely a flaky USB to SATA adapter inside the drive. I would recommend taking it back and exchanging it, if it is still within the return period. Jas
