I have been a huge Ubuntu advocate until Unity. I can't stand it for a number of reasons. My laptops are both System76 machines, and thus run Ubuntu. I have not changed from the core OS installed, but did install Gnome Shell to prevent giving up all together. On my home desktop, it is in the mi

I'm using Ubuntu LTS (10.4) on my workstation. That's due to be upgraded with 12.4, at which time I'll need to make a decision. I'll evaluate that version of Unity, but expect I might be going with GUbuntu, or else go back to Fedora. I really don't want to be upgrading my workstation every 6 mo

Fedora thinks a drive is part of a motherbaord based raid. but isnt?

Ok this is a first for me. I have a drive im trying to install FC16 to to play with gnome3 and the current incarnation of Fedora. weird thing is the installer thinks that the drive is part of an onboard hybrid array (which there is one) and will not let me install. I took the drive used the WD t

ok, I am going to need some visual assistance. I need to setup opensuse on a new HD and there appears to be no way for me to do so in a non-visual way. so if someone can get hold of me on Skype (technomage-hawke) I can start a video session and get the ball rolling. someone please help here. -

I want to compress a bunch pictures to put a bunch on my zip drive. What is the best program to use? I was thinking 'zip' would be good because it automatically appends the file. But when I was reading the man page on it it said some thing about it being good for text files. Is this good for graphi

I've used every version of ubuntu since 6.04 on the desktop (and extensive server) full-time, and while it's always been a bit cranky, it was always the most together and solid linux. Packaging was simply never a problem, nor were dependencies (ahem, redhat and spawn). It became quite literal

Put another way: some graphic file formats are inherently compressed: .JPEG, .GIF and .PNG for starters. Some aren't, such as .TIF and .RAW. If they're NOT already compressed, then .ZIP or other archive compression will help. If they're compressed already, nope...won't do squat. Another problem

Drivers probably aren't working right and probing the right resolutions from the display. Check your drivers in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log. What kind of video is it? If ati/nvidia, you'll want to install the proprietary blob drivers to get any level of performance and feature

Correct, though those came long after it'd already nauseated me the first time. When I needed to compile everything I needed anyways, slack was a much better option - in 1999. Fast forward to 2007, the last time I purposely had to deal with RHEL, my experiences were not all that dissimilar.
