The problem is in your PC and/or network connection. Something is
blocking internet access getting the asx info (i.e. the mms url you just
played) from BBC. Using the URL direct bypasses the asx fetch and SC
passes the URL straight to SB. Since it plays OK - the problem is in the
ASX fetch by PC

SC is undergoing protocol changes in 7.4 and iPeng is currently NOT
compatible with all of these changes.
Not all of iPeng's functionality will work with SC 7.4

Well that's the point. We're both in the UK about 40 miles apart. His
works, mine doesn't. Neither of us have changed anything in our
respective setups. The only difference being he has a boom whereas I
have the kit in my sig, none of which will stream BBC radio channels.

Radiotime will supply WMA URLs first - so if the user is in the UK they
will play.
If the user is outside of the UK the WMA URL will fail - in which case
if the user has AlienBBC installed - RadioTime will supply a RTSP
(RealAudio) URL as a 2nd URL in a playlist and this will then play.

still waiting to find out the exact url he's using but he categorically

I think the BBC have changed their website - the code will need to be
updated.
as a stopgap you can add the BBC opml feed to the SC "Podcast"
settings.

My AlienBBC setup has developed an issue in that the BBC podcasts have
stopped working - it just says "Empty" when I click on a channel under
the podcasts.
Any ideas as to what the issue could be? What logs should I get?

For future reference :
solution to my BBC iPlayer problem was that the plugin doesn't work
through Softsqueeze.
As soon as I got to an environment where I had squeezeboxes it worked
just fine.
