My first thought on reading this is that you have the
OS 8 CD in the drive, but it's trying to boot from the
Hard Drive...

Mostly out of curiosity, I recently bought myself a PB 5300CS. After
upgrading the OS to 8.1, the little machine runs better...no crashing,
hangups, etc. However I still have some work to do.
The PRAM battery is completely dead, and I'm wondering if that might be
causing some strange

Actually, I tried that (well, not the voodoo stuff, but I don't have any SCSI devices
connected, so that shouldn't be necessary :{) ). I'm going to bet that is the very
dead PRAM battery, I've seen it do some strange things to a Mac. I ordered one, will
see what it does before I pester you
Anyone ever tried to hack a PC Card slot into an iBook?

Maybe the new 14 one has enough room to try?
I just really like plugging my Compact Flash card into it's adapter and directly into
the PC Card slot on my
A dead PRAM battery will cause all the problems you've described and
more. Google green light of death (GLOD) and fill yourself in. I have
one sitting here that only runs when the planets are in a certain
alignment. It needs a PRAM battery

Yep. Had one for several months. I used it primarily with my Pismo,
but it works (and boots) on my PB 3400.
