n upgraded Powerbook 540c tonight
(100MHz 603E PowerPC cpu instead of the 68LC040, 40MB RAM, OS 8.1).
The Powerbook was very very noticeably slower. Screen scrolling was
especially painful.
Does anyone have any theories and/or suggestions for improvement?

Hello! I just got a 5300cs. It's power adapter broke, so I'm in the proccess
of getting a new one. Is this a good idea or no? If I do get a power

My sentiments exactly, having recently moved over to X I can confirm that
Safari 'Does what it says on the tin' ;-)
It feels faster than IE and so far has had no problems with page rendering,
I am thinking of making it my default browser and just keeping IE as a
backup.

As a follow-up to my previous post, if you can only get a 166 card, I can
give you the details to under-clock it to 133 so it works with the early
Rom's as I had to do that with my 1400 (I later upgraded the Rom's with a
set from a scrap board, it now supports 166 fine).

to go over 130Gb, but a 40, 80 or 120 should just drop in fine. (the
mounting holes are different, but that is not much of a problem, everyone

tunately I do not have the SCSI pin-out to hand, if you have the
pin-out then check for 5V between term-power & ground, if it is absent then
you will have to pull the book apart to find the fuse, it is probably a 1A
surface-mount.

also have the Apple 100Mhz PPC card but it is not fitted at the moment
because of the cardcage incompatibility, how much are you asking for the rev

e to cross-talk rather than external pick-up, the only
long-term solution is to buy good quality cables (and possibly a good
switchbox as the cheap ones can give quite a bit of cross-talk even with
good cables)

Here is a link about using a generic PC card in a powerbook. It
applies to the 500 series notebooks, but also works for any non
cardbus classic running macs. If you do have PPC, newer drivers, but
for 8.1 and below, use the version 6 off of the web site.

Since there have been two requests recently for info on the use of CF cards
in PowerBooks I figured I'd give my two cents, citing personal experience in
using this option on both a 5300 (c, cs, and now ce) as well as a 3400c.
Basically, I didn't notice a difference when using the cards for VM stora
