Hi All! A friend gave me a Powerbook 170 that won't go. I charged up and recycled the battery with a conditioner and it holds a charge, but the Mac doesn't do ANYTHING when I press the start button. There is no hard drive, but I don't think it would need one just to bring up the

I got handed an old PB170 to see if I could get the data off the HDD. Boots up to a question mark, doesn't come up in SCSI Disk mode, either. (which kinda worries me, isn't that all hardware?) Does a 170 have problems finding it's hard drive it's got a dead PRAM batter

the hard drive on my PB170 seems to have developed an intermittent fault. Sometimes it goes fine, but sometimes when the machine tries to access the drive, all I get is a "chk-a-chk, chk-a-chk,chk-a-chk" sound, and sometimes "chk-a-chk, chk-a-chk, zoot, zoot; chk-a-chk, chk-a-chk, zoot, zoot".

Marshall, Thanks for the response. Yes, there is a jack on the back of the Powerbook, and I had already set it for internal modem via the Portable control panel. But still when I try to configure the modem to dial out via ConfigPPP, all it sees is the external modem port. Any ideas? Thanks,

I used mine this spring for a statistics course... it runs the math coprocessor xlispstat pretty well! I also used it to hold a pdf version of a meeting catalog (American Physical Society March Meeting-- paper catalogs are about the size of a good size phone book) and that worked fairly well
