Quite a few diferances by the looks of things, the hinge pivots are further
appart , how come the battery is at the front?, what sits in front of the
master cylinder where the battery lives on mk2 2+2s?
I too was under the impression the 2 fronts were interchangeable, every day is

It's sad to see so many rusty engine frames, why make a GRP car and then
put a bit of metal on that goes rusty in no time, they should have been
galvanized or powder coated properly at least.

Can't say I'm a fan of powdercoating, and galvanising can give distortion
problems although it lasts well. All that's required (as long as the metal
isn't rusty before it's painted!) is to keep the water/air away from it! A good
galvanic primer, undercoat and topcoat can give excellent results,

Yup - I know - on the list of things to do is to paint the engine bay...
When I get chance ;-)

Agreed about the poor metal treatment, such a shame on a lovely grp car, and im
not a fan of powder coating either, lifts off and rust spreads underneath, i
used POR15 on mine, so tough and stuck so well it will not even shot blast off
with corse glass grit- i tried, ill never use anything else
Quantum were told they were being power coated but it wasn't, it was
just paint.
I don't think they were even sandblasted before painting, mine started
going rusty even before it was on the road.
Almost everything that has been painted on my 2+2 was done with smooth
Hammerite including the
The problem I've found with Hammerite or Smoothrite in the past (going back
several years, agreed) was that it seemed to be so brittle that even an ambient
temp change seemed to create invisible cracks, and after a couple of years it
peeled off in sheets to reveal a lot of rust where water had

We are still making the mould from the front of Q017, so expect to be
polishing, sanding or working with fibre glass.
Please contact me directly if you might be able
I too hate hammerite, its just not tough enough on anything other than a garden
gate, even then if reconsider, i once resprayed a whole car in smooth in the
belief it would be long lasting, it wasn't

I welded up some garden gates 4 years ago... Red oxide primer, grey
undercoat, Rustins satin black. All applied by brush and still as good as
new. Much better than hammerite even on a gardern gate!!

The reason for original Quantum not having the frames galvanised was due to
cost. I have Been advised that they had to be competitive with the rest of the
kit car world.
One way that I like to protect, and have done so now to quite a few cars is :-
shot blast, zinc plate (cold process no

Sand blasted and zinc plated all my 2+2 components 9 years ago for £200 no rust
visible since, very happy with the result. Even though I did not think value
for money at the time.
