Ask yourself this: Would the battery life of (totally guessing here) 6-10 hours be sufficient for this application if it did _not_ power itself down completely? The big power drain here is the wifi and as long as the Radio is in standby, the wifi would run and stay in contact with the wireless

You many want to consider connecting a low powered older computer to your network (wired or unwired), which I think most people have, and install SB server on it. You can leave that on all the time. I think the energy usage for those old PC's would be much less than your main powerful computer.
