Nothing that uses WMA is perfect.
Due to the way MS is licensing this codec, WMA is a mess and to be
avoided. IMHO.

Huh? :) I personally have never had any issues with using copy
protected WMA or WMV files on any of my devices when I was using
Napster. I don't seem to have any issues with Zune either. It
actually works pretty darn nice on my mango based phone. So that's
news to me. Not sure why I would
Try any iOS App except for Napster, for example. I assume Napster eats
the hefty license fee (or has some gross license anyway).
Microsoft's license fees for WMA are ridiculous and al the free codecs
(OK, I only know about one anyway) are GPL'ed.
WMA _with_ DRM will not even work on your
Ahhh.. Now it all makes sense. Let's just say I'm definitely not a mac
person.

And probably not a Linux person, too. And not a Squeezebox person, if
you have no problem with DRM'ed WMAs.
Albeit.. it DOES work on both Mac and Linux PCs (without DRM), it's the

Zune is basically perfect
But you are aware of the fact that MS already has announced the end of
this service? I'm sorry to spoil your day...

Well, I thought the plan was not to shut down the zune services, but
probably a 'rebranding' since the Zune players have been eol'ed. First
step is to migrate the service to the Windows Phone 7.5 App Store,
after that integration with Windows App Store (Windows 8). So it
depends on the succes of
I think there may be a lot of confusion between the old failed Zune
players and Zune Music Pass / Zune Marketplace which will be integrated
into Windows 8; and, already part of Windows phones. I didn't hear any
plans to rebrand Zune Music Pass Zune Marketplace. The only news I
heard this month
My Napster subscription membership was recently dumped to Rhapsody.
Since Zune offers a super nice user interface, 192kbps WMA files, tight
integration to Win8/Mango OS), I switched in a heartbeat.
Zune is basically perfect; however, the only thing missing is a
Squeezebox Server plugin. Is
I too would love to see some sort of Zune Pass integration. Currently
I'm using the wavinput plug-in to capture and stream, but it's not
super ideal as you need to initiate playback from the PC and you don't
get songnames/coverart.

At the moment only WMP, WMC or the actual Zune software will open the
files.
With Squeezebox the DRM secret handshakes occur in the player
firmware. That's because the server software is open source,
Ahh I see.
From trying XBMC and Muso just now they won't play the Zune files
either, so it kinda looks like I'm (we are) stuck with one of the MS
players and the wavin plug-in for now. Realistically I should just be
grateful I've got that option thanks to bpa et al.
Would be awesome if the
I'm surprised that some of you do not know how the zune system works.
The issue I am concerned about is not purchasing individual songs for
$0.99 or whatever. It is the music SUBSCRIPTION service that I need. I
pay $14.99 per month and can download or stream (I prefer to download
the tracks), and

No, we know precisely how Zune works, which is why we (and many others
based on Zune's low market share) avoid it. ;)
I use Napster at $5 per month which has a much larger library than Zune

Obviously not. But
DRM has to be supported in the player firmware. In case of the the
players based on the ip3k chips the point is moot as they can not
accomodate any moore big changes even if logitech wanted (similar
things have been discussed in the past )
They can't even bring AAC to these players, they are full

As has been suggested already, you can do this now!
Point Squeeze Server to *any* music on your computer or HDD or NAS and
your SB player will play it.
So just point Squeeze Server to your Zune

how about some kind of support for the zune and the zune marketplace
What form of support would that be? It sounds like asking Toyota to
support Trek bicycles. And a bike rack would be analogous to the 3.5mm
cable that iPhone mentioned. That's about as far as it goes.

Are these WMA files? Do they have DRM (digital rights management)? If
they don't have DRM then you can import and play. Just as with Apple and

The SB Radio doesn't hold any music, the SB Server does. So as long as
the files don't have DRM protection, just transfer/copy/import them to
your computer and put them with the rest of your music library.
