Does anyone use a wald medium basket on a rear-mounted Top Rack?
I'm thinking I may need to do that temporarily for a little bike-camping
trip...

I did this on my Sam. I did use a pan head screw I found at the hardware store.
I am using honjo fenders. However concept is the same. I will take a picture
and post in the morning to make sure we are talking about the same place for
the screw.

Have you considered the hostel at Pt Reyes? I've stayed there several
times--it's quite nice. We carry food from the store at Pt Reyes Station and
use the hostel's kitchen. Only downside is the 17% grade that you'll climb to
get out in the morning.

then later 34. I think the newest SGS versions climb to 36, but I'm not
certain. Do you know what generation/model you have?

I would remove the chain and then manually shift into the largest cog
position. You should be able to view the alignment from behind the bike.

Should add that sometimes you have to reverse the b -screw to get enough
adjustment for a 36t cog.

I cannot for the life of me get the rear cassette to shift into the largest
two cogs. The drive train is as follows:
Sugino XD-2 46/36/24, Shimano cassettes- 9 Speed 12-36t, Shimano Deore LX
rear derailer, Shimano Deore
Try to get rid of the toe clips and move your feet around. I use Grip Kings
and Tevas with or without socks, or Sambas with heavy wool socks below 40 deg.
When I'm seated I have the ball of my feet just in front of the spindle. When

adjuster. By that logic, I should have thrown out the suntour rear deraileur

friends over the years to motorcycle fatalities, and wouldn't ever consider
getting on a motorcycle...(until recently, strangely enough). It's just

you are shifting friction.

I say: use a current mtb rear derailleur. The best rear derailleur, by the
measure of smooth and easy shifting in friction,

I've read of people using a mid cage 105 with a 32t cog on road bikes. But
every bike is a little different and doesn't always work for everyone with
all bikes. It usually takes some tweaking with the set screw.

think I would hesitate to do what you suggest on a bike with side pull brakes
as long as there is a reasonable amount of clearance between the head of the

Similarly, my wife was perfectly happy with her old Trek 1420 until the
stars aligned to put her onto an Atlantis for a test ride

the bridge cylinder?
I could use a really short screw with a panhead, but not sure how many
turns I could get in there and if it would hold. Maybe just three.

He's one of the few folks I would trust to build my wheels. Not that

You'd be surprised how much grunge can make its way into the bearings
without any kind of cap. Since most grease formulations will attract grit
and then adhere to it, you end up adding a grinding paste to your
bearings. Not immediate, of course, but something to avoid if possible.

All of the camp sites in Pt. Reyes National Seashore is hike-in (or
bike-in!) only, but they are all quite nice. I've stayed at Sky Camp and
whatever the one near the beach is called. Sky camp especially is a
