I use the Garmin Edge 25 for daily commutes, and day trips. Its a bare bones model that looks like the body of a Casio G Shock watch. It's battery runs 6-7 hours ad allows me to save precious phone juice. For extended trips I use an Etrex 30 - definitely overkill for what you are looking for.
