BikeFlights claim submitted yesterday.
For those unaware, even if you call BikeFlights, their phone answering service
navigates you to a “Do you want to make a claim” menu, then dumps you to a
place to record a msg. Then they reply via email, which has a From name that
looks nothing like
I’ve also been in this situation, although in my case the frame was ruined. The
shop never did take any ownership, but the shipping company eventually covered
most of the cost of a new frame.

I was on the receiving end of this of this as a buyer and the shop that botched
the job reimbursed me both packing and shipping costs. I initially tried to
file a claim with the freight handler but they said the damage was due to
packaging which I concurred with. Ended up with a complete
I don't know how to resolve it legally, but all that damage didn't come from a
box being tossed around. The whole point of packing the bike a certain way - as
described on the Bike Flights site - is to protect it even if something presses
against the box. Metal-to-metal contact means whoever
I guess there is a first time for everything. The beautiful, pristine Sam
I sold recently was damaged by what looks like a bad packing job, and the
bike shop owners are pointing the finger at Fedex, even though the box
isn't showing any signs of being hit, penetrated, folded, creased, etc..
Hello Bunch, SS-coupled Riv owners:
I am getting my 59 cm Hilsen retrofitted with SS couplers. It's not a
gigantic frame but not exactly a small frame either. I already anticipate a
couple of issues and would like a couple of tips.
1/ Handlebar: is there such thing out there as a quill stem w/
I have done this many times, but my Bleriot is a 51cm...
The only tools I need to dismantle it to fit in the case are:
Topeak Rachet Rocket (best little hex set EVER)
Park MLP-1
a couple of 8/10 open end (crescent) wrenches for the cable splitters, racks
and headlight. The Sears Craftsman are
Has anyone packed their bike for travel on Amtrak or bus lines? Tips and
recommendations? THe whole process seems daunting (what to do with the box/bag
while I cycle, how to handle fenders and racks, protect the derailleur, etc.
I've no idea if/when I would travel this way (not sure how my
Amtrak has their own boxes, and it's easy. Typically all that is required to
prepare the bike is to remove the pedals and turn the handlebar sideways, then
roll it into the box and tape it up. If the station has used boxes on-hand,
they're typically free, but you might have to ask specifically
I've found that bus line requirements are highly variable. Some will allow you
to put a loaded touring bike, unboxed, in the luggage compartment. Others want
it in a box of certain dimensions. And others don't allow it at all. Most of
the time, the driver's discretion trumps the rules.

I have a medium shopsack too, for groceries, and I love it.In fact, I
want to get another one- but I notice they aren't on the site anymore.
Where'd they go? I hope they weren't discontinued with the sale (were
they?)! I'd be really bummed if that were the case.

I made a grocery run mid-day today, enough eggs, bacon, sausage, cashews
and spinach for the rest of the week. When I packed up to ride home, I
realized the clothes and cable locks and food were too much for the
(medium) bag to hold with its zipper closed. What to do, what to do... then

Ok so I went to the garage to pack and realized that I had put new steel
fenders on the Bombadil and that the lowrider tubes rack wouldn't mount the way
it used to.. after 30 minutes a couple of added spacers and fortunately an easy
go of it it all was mounted and ready to go. Then I realized
Love it!!!

There's really not much difference here than with an S24O. 35-40-lbs
Great new vid showing the Riv-tastic packing method for complete bikes
on the site. Of course, I always shellack my boxes, and use hemp twine
rather than packing tape, but that's just me.

Packing the Travelo for a visit to Arizona next week, I happened upon
