650b's back on it, adjusted the brakes, so it's back to ol' self.
With that done, I popped the 700c wheelset into the canti-Rom's frame for
the first time to have a look at clearances.

kids do.
What brakes are you using on the Bomb that you have that much adjustment?

Hi Tom-
I have been running the Continental 42's for several months. I bot them
from Riv and they were said to actually measure 38 mm which I found to be
true. I have liked them - mainly riding on roads but with a few wild rides
on gravel, dirt, frozen dirt etc. My only problem was finding
True, the Little Big Bens don't have side-knobs, only the even square-block
tread... I still think it might be a good tire for me, but, I'm still
looking for something w/ side-knobs, too. And I agree, the Sammy Slick
does seem narrower than what I want, too.
I like the MSO, but it may be
Did you buy that Canti-Rom that was recently FS in the East Bay? I don't
know their max fit. Mine can just fit 42mm, but that is with ridiculous
close clearances. 40mm is much better. The MSO looks like it maxes out
right around 39, so could just fit for both of us!

Don't know if I'm helping or hindering here, but Continental has a 42 mm

I'm also checking out tyres in this category size range

David,
Not that one; Alex in St Paul posted his for sale here as a complete, but
I talked him into just the frame (and a few other bits).

The official quoted size is 38; but that's usually on the conservative

I've seen reports of the MSO measuring ~40mm on wider rims like 24mm Dyad.
On the Canti-roms with the right kind of brake pads ( the short ones that
swing out of the way) you could probably fit the MSO's on the fork. I was
thinking about adding canti's on my Ram for reason, but sold it to fund
That's a good one as well! The East Bay one caught my attention for a
minute or two!!!
Tom Thomas: Those 42mm Contis look intriguing! Another option out there!

Riv used to carry the Conti Speed king in 42. Measured around 38 mm. The
Conti Cross ride looks a bit beefier to me.
Vee Rubber also carries a few 700x40's... the X-C-X and Rail and maybe
others.

I'm pondering other tires too, at the moment;have you considered the
Little Big Brown against the MSO and Happy Medium? How about Schwalbe
Sammy Slick?

Hi Leslie, the Little BBs don't look like they have enough (any) side
knobs, and the SS are listed 35mm, so probably actually closer to 32 given
Schwalbe's inconsistency in sizing. I want a full 40, so the MSO is looking
good!

my Schwalbe 700x40 Smart Sam's are 40.7 mm knob to knob on 23mm Salsa rims.
The casing measures 38.5 mm
They have nice side knobs and corner pretty good on dirt. They're just OK
on the pavement. Wire bead and 540 gms.

On Monday, June 3, 2013 7:18:52 PM UTC-7,
good find David. One issue with this data is that some tires grow with
age. The JB Greens on my Coho are measuring 34.5 mm with abut 2000 miles on
them on 20mm rims. They were a 1.5mm narrower when I put them on.
One big thing not well represented on the list are 650B tires... we need

Yes, obsessive-compulsive 650B riders, this is your moment to shine!!!
You're right about the tire growth. My JB-Gs are @ 34 right now. At least
the rear is @ 65psi. Front @ 40psi is still right @ 33.3.
I found it linked to a MSO review I was reading. I think I'm down to the
MSO and the Kenda
Thanks David.

Could not agree more. Just to add to the wish list 650b knobbies. Emailed

too bad the BG Rockn'roads won't fit as they are a really nice tire. Just
got a almost new pair form Ryan (Seattle) and mounted up the back to see
how it would fit the Rafi. It clears the seatstays, but only have 2mm of
clearance. Too tight for me. They measured 44mm on 23mm wide Salsa rims.
David:
Good stuff. The listings for Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 700 are consistent
with my experience. The Vittoria Rando Hypers that are on the Atlantis now
are also on-size (40 mm). Thats on Mavic's A 719 rim at IIRC 22 mm.
I'll check the rim width on the mini-Lantis. Right now it's got
Tire manufacturers must need large runs to make any money. Rivendell
probably has to order enough tires to last a couple of years before a
manufacturer will talk to the them. Panaracer must have a warm spot in
their heart for the niche inhabited by Rivendell Compass.
Then there's the issue
When I had my Bleriot, I desperately wanted a light 40mm knobbie for it.
That's the big hole in the 650B market right now. Whoever makes the move
and does that would have the market to themselves.
