My hydro guru uses multi tap transformers to get the best output voltage.
You'll need three, so,they don't have to be large for a 1kw turbine.

I second tump.
Most likely a bad /cell battery took out the system.
As these are VRLA batteries, I'm curious do,the cases look damaged such as
expanded or sunk in?

Just a standard bridge rectifier, with correct amp rating.
AC to diode to CC, thats it.
All regulation is via CC.
