I ran into this same problem at work when I upgraded my machine from RedHat 4.2 to 5.0. There are underscores in ever machine name on our WAN, and 5.0 just won't go there. Oh well, It's something I have been able to work around by adding machines to /etc/hosts (just the ones that are necessary).
