Think it's a "feature" of CIFS and/or NetBIOS, which you can't turn
off. No doubt it's documented on the Samba site, and it makes it even more
important to disallow access to the NetBIOS ports.

This is a long shot, but do you have power management (APM) enabled? Some
computers like to notify you of changes in PM states by emitting a few merry
beeps.

Hal is right, and you should learn how to spell and perhaps take a refresher

I can recommend XFCE as a lightweight windows manager. Have been running it
on a 486-DX100 system with 20MB RAM without too many problems. Go to
www.xfce.org to download a copy.
