It seems like your snmpd is not running or is not listening on the
internal interface (lo). Please try service snmpd status or ps ax |

want this for MRTG'ing (I graph the same things pretty much)

Thanks for the answer.
I am beginning to suspect a bug in the Cisco software version we are
running.
It takes the snmp-server command to enable authentication but afterwards
when one does a sh conf, it does not show it.
As far as the syslog goes, i have added the line to log auth at priority
8, i now get some traps logged.
I also have set up the Cisco to log remotely to the syslog on the rh box.
I am getting the interface state changes for the async interfaces in both
the /var/messages file from syslog and thesnmptrapd.log which is where
snmptrapd is now logging the snmp stuff.

If you're serious about a large cluster maybe you will want to use SNMP
and NMS (well known standards). My choices (for Solaris and Linux) are:
- SNMP Agent: Net-SNMP (http://net-snmp.sourceforge.net)
- NMS: OpenNMS (http://www.opennms.org)

I have been trying to get a grasp of SNMP and don't understand mibs
at all. Does anyone know of a good resource that explains these?

uptime (no snmp daemon uptime) and average CPU load. From what I

Quick and dirty is not how Linux works.
