Which Service Name are you using?
Since every service name is used to create some mysql tables and is used
as a part of the table name - some chars in the service name do not
work. You could create a Service with a wrong char in it - but it won't
work like it's supposed to do.

aman console command in /usr/local/bin. There were also a bunch of
directories I had to create in /var/aman.

sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/mysql /etc/init.d/mysqld
I suppose this is preferable to a source code change under debian?
